SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Nine UC Santa Barbara men's water polo student-athletes were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Men's Scholar-Athlete Team for their achievements in the classroom, announced earlier this week.
Head coaches nominated student-athletes based on their Grade Point Average (GPA) at three different levels. From 3.71-4.0 classifies as Outstanding, 3.41-3.70 is Superior and 3.40-3.20 is Excellent.
Senior Max Schaum and sophomore Ivan Gvozdanovic were both recognized in the Outstanding category, while five Gauchos in senior Mitch Young, sophomores Tommy Fellner and Jacob Halle, as well as freshmen Cole Brosnan and Jack Bignell, were recognized at the Superior level. Rounding out the honorees is junior Boris Jovanovic and sophomore Justyn Barrios in the Excellent category.
For Schaum, the honor marks his third consecutive appearance on the ACWPC All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Team, while Barrios, Fellner, Gvozdanovic, Halle, Jovanovic and Young were honored for the second straight year. Freshmen Brosnan and Bignell were honored for the first time.
In all, a total of 339 (77 Outstanding, 145 Superior, 117 Excellent) student-athletes were named to the 2017 ACWPC Scholar-Athlete Team.
