2017 GCC All-Conference Team
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Five student-athletes from the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team earned All-Golden Coast Conference honors as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Reed Cotterill led the honorees with First Team accolades and Shane Hauschild landed on the Second Team. Ivan Gvozdanovic garnered Honorable Mention status while Cole Brosnan and Adam Lott were both named to the All-Freshman Team.
After missing the first four games of the year due to playing with Team Australia in the World University Games, Cotterill returned as an integral playmaker and earned First Team honors for the second straight year. The senior team captain led UCSB with 25 drawn exclusions, more than twice as many as the next Gaucho, and tallied a career-high six in one match against then No. 3 ranked Cal. Last year's leading scorer, Cotterill has scored 18 goals in 17 games in 2017, to go along with nine steals, seven field blocks and five assists.
Hauschild has had a decorated four-year career for the Gauchos and caps off his senior campaign with All-GCC Second Team honors after being named to the First Team as a junior. The local product out of San Marcos High School led UCSB in nearly every major statistic in 2017, leading the way with 33 goals, 18 assists, 29 steals, 10 field blocks and 129 shots. Joining Cotterill as the other team captain, Hauschild played in all 21 games while ramping up his play against conference opponents. In five GCC matches, Hauschild ranks second in the league with 15 goals, third with 19 total points, and fourth with 12 steals.
Despite missing much of the second half of the season due to injury, Gvozdanovic earned All-GCC Honorable Mention honors for the second consecutive year. In just 13 games, the Serbian native ranks second on the team with 24 goals in addition to 10 assists, 11 steals, seven drawn exclusions and a pair of field blocks. Gvozdanovic started the season strong with 10 goals through the first five games and set a career-high with five goals in the home-opener against Air Force.
Rounding out the UCSB selections is the freshmen pair of Brosnan and Lott, who made an immediate impact in their debut campaign to land on the All-GCC Freshman Team. Lott finished fourth on team with 20 goals, tied for third with 10 drawn exclusions, and displayed strong defense with 10 steals. Brosnan, meanwhile, was right behind Lott on the leaderboard with 19 goals while dishing out seven assists to go with four steals and two field blocks.
Pacific sophomore attacker Luke Pavillard was named GCC Player of the Year while San Jose State freshman Jacob Mercep and UC Irvine freshman Fynn Schuetze were named Co-Newcomers of the Year.
UCSB (10-11, 1-4 GCC) will be the No. 6 seed for the upcoming 2017 GCC Championships, and will take on No. 3 seed UC Irvine this Friday, Nov. 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
