No. 8 Gauchos Welcome No. 3 Cal for Rematch on Saturday

Weekend Preview
The No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team will welcome No. 3 Cal (11-1) to Campus Pool for the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Gauchos squared off against Cal over the first week of the season at the Triton Invitational and gave the then No. 1-ranked Bears a battle before falling 8-7. Shane Hauschild and Ivan Gvozdanovic tallied a pair of goals apiece in that match. Cal is coming off its first loss of the year, a 9-8 upset from No. 4 UCLA at the Mountain Pacific Invitational.

Last Week's Results
The Gauchos had a strong showing at the prestigious Mountain Pacific Invitational over the weekend, posting a 3-1 record against ranked opponents. After dropping the opening match of the tournament 11-8 against No. 10 UC Irvine, UCSB took down RV San Jose State 13-12, No. 12 Princeton 14-7 and No. 9 UC Davis 12-9. Hauschild had a big week for the Gauchos, leading the team with six goals while adding seven steals and six assists. Hauschild ramped up his play in the final two matches of the tournament, tallying two goals, three assists and two steals against Princeton before recording another pair of goals, two assists and four steals against UC Davis.

Poll Position
After holding strong at No. 7 in the Top-20 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) National Poll over the past two weeks, the Gauchos dropped one spot to No. 8 as UC Irvine jumped from No. 10 to No. 7. There is a new No. 1 on the board after UCLA topped previously unbeaten Cal over the weekend to claim the top spot. USC remains at No. 2 while the Bears dropped to No. 3. GCC rival Pacific has continued to hold at No. 5 with Long Beach State at No. 6, Pepperdine at No. 9 and San Jose State up to No. 18.

Offensive Leaders
Gvozdanovic still leads UCSB with 21 goals through 12 games so far this season. Boris Jovanovic is second on the team with 18 goals, while leading the way with 71 attempts, and Shane Hauschild is close behind with 16 goals. The freshman trio of Adam Lott, Cole Brosnan, and Chad Nelson are the next three top scorers with 15, 12 and 12 goals, respectively. Brannan Haket leads the team with 10 assists while Jovanovic is second with nine. Reed Cotterill is tied for first on the team with Lott with 10 drawn exclusions.

Defensive Leaders
Justyn Barrios leads the Gauchos with 60 saves in nine games played and Connor Macdonald has seen a lot of action recently, tallying 27 saves in six games. Hauschild leads all Gauchos with five field blocks and 10 steals while Tommy Fellner has eight take-aways of his own. As a team, the Gauchos have logged 104 steals on the year.
