Gauchos Victorious in Home Opener with 13-10 Win Over No. 9 UC San Diego

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-- No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (5-1) opened its 2014 home schedule with a hard fought win over No. 9 UC San Diego (2-3). With goals from seven different players, Santa Barbara showcased a collective effort on both offense and defense.

The opening three minutes of the match was filled with great defense as both teams were locked in on a goalless tie. Junior, Ryan Baliani scored his first of three goals to give UCSB the 1-0 lead. After San Diego's Josh Stiling tied the game at the 3:02 mark, freshman attacker, Josh Jordan netted two straight goals to give the Gauchos the 2-1 lead.

After missing on two straight 6-on-5 situations, Santa Barbara finally struck with a powerful goal from freshman, Shane Hauschild. A little less than a minute later, Hauschild scored his second goal of the match from a five meter penalty shot. Junior, Matthew Hamilton extended the Gauchos lead to 6-3 after a beautiful lob shot at the 1:32 mark. The Tritons did not back down though; scoring two goals in the last minute to make it a 6-5 score at the half.

Opening the third period with a 7:12 goal from senior, Luca De Vivo, the Tritons tied the match, 6-6. Despite three unanswered goals from San Diego, the Gauchos responded with a streak of its own. Baliani and Hamilton each netted their second goal of the match to give the home team the 8-6 edge. In a man up situation, junior, Kevin Cappon rifled in a shot to the bottom left corner to give UCSB a three goal edge. Capitalizing on a 6-on-5 play, San Diego's Stiling completed his hat trick; cutting into the Gauchos lead before the final period.

Holding onto a 9-7 lead, UCSB quickly struck in the final period with a powerful two meter goal from Nicholas Jordan. Baliani completed his own hat trick with a 5:30 score to give UCSB its first four goal lead of the match. San Diego once again came back; trimming the lead to two, but ultimately fell short. With another goal from Cappon and a late :13 second score from junior, Chase Racich, the Gauchos clinched its fifth victory of the season.

Offensively, the Gauchos had seven different players score as Baliani led the team with three goals. Hauschild, Jordan, Cappon, and Hamilton all tallied two goals during today's match as Racich and Nick Jordan scored one apiece.

Senior, Chris Whitelegge once again came huge in today's match with impressive saves at crucial times. Tallying eight saves on the day, Whitelegge continues to play at a high level with a total of 42 saves thus far this season.
