Men’s Water Polo Takes Down Irvine, Travels to Stanford for Another Conference Match

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (16-6, 3-2) tallied another solid win today as the team defeated No. 8 UC Irvine (11-9, 0-4) by the score of 11-7.

It was Irvine that got on the scoreboard first as the Anteaters tallied an early 7:35 goal. The Gauchos bounced back with a beautiful goal from sophomore Kevin Cappon. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Whitelegge highlighted the first period. Continuing to play big in the cage, Whitelegge had a remarkable save on a five meter penalty shot for Irvine. With three more goals from Eric Van de Mortel, Derek Shoemaker and Nicholas Jordan, Santa Barbara took the slim 4-3 lead after the first period.

The opening moments of the second period were all about the defense as both teams were held goalless. After Irvine tied up the game, senior Bryce Miller scored two straight goals to giveUCSB the 6-4 lead at the intermission.

The Gauchos dug deep and separated themselves from Irvine in the third period. Jump started by a 7:04 goal by Kevin Cappon, the Gauchos increased its lead to 9-4 with goals from Van de Mortel and Matt Gronow.

Entering the final period with a 9-5 lead, the Gauchos continued to execute, scoring two more goals in the period. With goals from Gronow and sophomore Tor Jensen, UCSB secured another win at home, defeating UC Irvine, 11-7.

The Gauchos spread the wealth today as Kevin Cappon, Bryce Miller, Matt Gronow and Eric Van de Mortel each had two goals apiece. Derek Shoemaker, Nicholas Jordan and Tor Jensen also registered a goal each for the offense.

Leading the defense was Chris Whitelegge as he recorded an impressive total of 18 saves; with two of those saves coming from two five meter penalty shots. Senior Jay Lovero stepped in tallying two saves of his own.

UCSB will be on the road as the team will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to take on No. 4 Stanford tomorrow at noon.
