Tough Test Ahead
No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (14-5, 1-1) looks to rebound from a close 12-9 loss last weekend against No. 5 Cal (12-4, 1-1). This weekend presents a strong challenge for the Gauchos, as they will compete in two more MPSF conference games.
Santa Barbara will be on the road to face off against No. 7 Long Beach State (16-5, 0-0) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at noon. This will already be the third meeting between the two programs this season with UCSB winning both of the close matches thus far. The Gauchos will have little time to ponder about the match against the 49ers as the team will travel back home to host No. 1 USC (19-1, 1-0) on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon.
Senior leader Matt Gronow is continuing to showcase his all around skills as he is among the goal scoring leaders in the MPSF. Through 19 games, Gronow has tallied an impressive total of 44 goals –eighth most in the conference– along with 27 assists. Along with Gronow, juniors Derek Shoemaker and Eric Van de Mortel are among the goal scoring leaders as Shoemaker has totaled 32 goals while Van de Mortel has notched in 29 goals this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Whitelegge is leading the MPSF in saves with a grand total of 198. That mark gives him a 14.67 saves per game average, which also leads the conference. Whitelegge is continuing his dominance in goal as he has only giving up an average of 8.07 goals per game.
Up Ahead on the Schedule
The Gauchos will continue to face premier competition as the team will host No. 8 UC Irvine at the Campus Pool next Saturday, Nov. 2 at noon. UC Santa Barbara will then travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to face off against No. 4 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 3 at noon.
