Men’s Water Polo Cruises to Victory Over Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.-- One week after its sixth place finish in the Nor Cal Tournament, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (8-2, 0-0) continued its season on the road as the team faced off against Cal Lutheran (4-10). The team bounced back and continued its winning way with a convincing 17-0 victory over Cal Lutheran.

UCSB started fast and finished strong; continuously pouring on the pressure against Cal Lutheran. With goals from Kevin Cappon, Matt Gronow, Nicholas Jordan, Derek Shoemaker, Bryce Miller and Nick Wiley, the Gauchos jumped out to an early and convincing 6-0 lead after the first period.

Santa Barbara was dominant in the game; limiting Cal Lutheran to 15 shots and no goals. The defense was solid in the match as Chris Whitelegge led the team with five saves. Freshman Kyle Garwick recorded three saves and junior Jay Lovero tallied two saves.

The Gauchos performed at a high level in all phases of the match. After starting fast and jumping out to an early lead, UCSB never looked back and finished the game victorious by the score of 17-0.

The men's water polo team continues its action on Friday with a 6 p.m. contest against No. 11 Concordia at El Toro High School. The team will then travel to San Diego, Calif. to face off against No. 14 UC San Diego at noon and Navy at 5 p.m.
