No. 6 UCSB Defeats Long Beach State, Loses to Pacific to Finish Sixth In Nor Cal Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif.-- No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (7-2, 0-0) had its highs and lows in the concluding day of the Nor Cal Tournament with a close 5-4 win over No. 9 Long Beach State (9-4) followed by a narrow 8-7 loss to No. 3 Pacific (9-1).

In its first match of the day, UCSB started fast providing much pressure on the 49ers defense. Sophomore Nicholas Jordan scored an early 7:25 goal, giving the Gauchos the early lead. Midway through the first period, junior Derek Shoemaker netted a score for UCSB giving the team an early and impressive 2-0 lead.

The start of the second period was a defensive showdown, with constant ejections from both teams. Junior Bryce Miller finally broke the defensive battle, scoring a goal to give the Gauchos the 3-1 lead. With a last second goal from junior Milos Vrzic, Long Beach State cut the deficit to 3-2 by the half.

The impressive defensive play from both teams carried into the second half as both teams were struggling to produce goals. Junior Eric Van de Mortel scored the lone goal of the third period, giving UCSB the 4-2 lead into the fourth period.

The last period was a nail biter as the 49ers tied the game 4-4 with 3:15 left in the game. The Gauchos came out clutch as senior Matt Gronow scored the game winning goal with 22 seconds remaining.

After defeating Long Beach State, Santa Barbara was set to face off against highly ranked Pacific in the fifth place match. Early on, the Gauchos gained control as Nicholas Jordan scored another early goal. Despite the early goal from Jordan, Pacific bounced back, closing the first period with two straight goals.

Falling into a 3-1 deficit, UCSB showed its resiliency by tying the match 3-3 with goals from Jordan and Matt Gronow.

The third period was all Tigers though, as Pacific regained the lead, producing four goals in the period. Junior Eric Van de Mortel scored the lone goal for the Gauchos in the third period.

Facing a three goal deficit, Santa Barbara showed its tough mental character as the team scored two early goals in the final period. Despite the early scores, Pacific found the net one more time giving themselves a two goal lead with 2:38 remaining. The Gauchos made one last push with a late goal by Matt Gronow, but ultimately fell just short of fifth place in the Nor Cal Tournament.

UCSB will have another busy weekend next week as the team will face off against Cal Lutheran and No. 16 Concordia on Friday, Sep. 27. On Saturday, Sep. 28, UCSB will then travel to San Diego, Calif. as the team is slated to face off against No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 20 Air Force.
