UCSB Opens Season with Pair of Wins

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara coasted past La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at the UCLA Invitational to open the season with a 2-0 record. The Gauchos posted a 20-3 victory over La Verne before securing another 17-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

The Gauchos began the first match with a 3-3 tie after the first quarter against the Leopards. Junior Eric Van de Mortel opened the second quarter with a goal to take the lead. From there, UC Santa Barbara tallied seven goals to take an 11-3 lead at half. Keeping the momentum going, the Gauchos ultimately cruised to a 20-3 victory over the Leopards. 

During the second game of the day, juniors Derek Shoemaker and Bryce Miller led the Gauchos with six goals apiece. Sophomore Chris Whitelegge totaled 13 saves to help the Gauchos on the defensive end. Five more Gauchos netted a goal to help the Gauchos towards their 17-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

UC Santa Barbara will be back in action again on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they head back to Santa Barbara to scrimmage Pepperdine at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm.
