Gauchos Lose Tight Match to Long Beach State

Los Angeles, Calif.After suffering a loss to undefeated No. 1 USC on the first day of the MPSF Championships, eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara entered the second day of the tournament looking to bounce back with a win. Unfortunately, the Gauchos could not claim a victory as they lost a tight match to Long Beach State, 14-11.

UCSB will conclude the MPSF Championships on Sunday, Nov. 24, against No. 6 Pepperdine at 10 am in the seventh place match.

Today's match against Long Beach State started off well for the Gauchos as they got off to a 4-0 lead at the midway point of the first period. With two 6-on-5 goals from Brian Shoemaker and one goal apiece from Derek Shoemaker and Matt Gronow, UCSB was cruising in the opening period. Long Beach State answered back with two unanswered goals as Milos Vrzic and Nolan McConnell made the score 4-2 after one period.

With a 7:22 goal from Teddy Zhang, UC Santa Barbara increased their lead to 5-2; but that lead was quickly answered back with a 6:37 goal from Nick Rascon of Long Beach State. With two more goals coming from Dan Matulis and Nick Rascon, the 49ers tied the match 5-5 with 2:21 remaining in the opening half. With a 6-on-5 goal from Teddy Zhang, UCSB recaptured the lead, but at the conclusion of the half, the two teams were all tied up, 6-6.

With two goals from Brian Schiefer, Long Beach State opened the third period with four unanswered goals to give them a 10-6 lead. A 3:27 goal from Bryce Miller ended the goalless drought for UCSB. Heading into the last period of the match, the Gauchos faced a 12-9 deficit.

Things started off well for the Gauchos as Derek Shoemaker scored his second goal of the match to make the score 12-10. Long Beach answered back though as they increased their lead to 13-10 with 6:19 remaining in the game. With a late goal from Matt Gronow, the Gauchos eventually lost to the 49ers, 14-11.

Brian Shoemaker, Teddy Zhang, Matt Gronow and Derek Shoemaker had solid days as they each netted two goals. Brendan McElroy, Jake Miller and Bryce Miller added one goal apiece to help the offense. Senior goalkeeper, Myles Christian once again led the defense as he recorded seven saves.
