U.S. Juniors Win Pool After Sweeping Mexico

Aug. 18, 2010

GATINEAU, Quebec - The U.S. Men's Junior National Team won Pool C at the 2010 NORCECA Men's Junior (U21) Continental Championship on Wednesday with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of Mexico at the Centre-Sportif de Gatineau.

Current Gauchos Dylan Davis (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Evan Mottram (Leona Valley, Calif.) are key players on the squad.

The United States improved its record to 3-0 and will have Thursday off and advance straight to Friday's semifinal round where it will play a quarterfinal winner. That match will be shown live online at ssncanada.ca.

Cuba (3-0) won its pool and will also advance straight to the semifinals. Canada (3-0) won its pool, but will have to play in Thursday's quarterfinal as the first-place team with the worst points ratio. Mexico (2-1) finished second in Pool C and will play in Friday's quarterfinals.

The U.S. has won all three of its Continental Championship matches by way of a sweep. It defeated Trinidad & Tobago Monday and took care of Martinique Tuesday.

"We didn't start out each set very well," head coach John Hawks said. "But I've got to give our guys a lot of credit. We made the necessary plays to get us going. Still, we knew we were going to play a very strong opponent in Mexico. It was a big test for us."

"We were really surprised with how much fire they came out with," said Davis, a middle blocker who is captaining the U.S. team. "We were not expecting that and it caught off us guard. But we came back and fought through it."

Mottram led the team in digs with five and three faults. He also was credited with 14 excellent service receptions and one fault on 26 attempts.

"The team did their best and they were really trying," said Mexico's head coach Francisco Javier Jimenez Espitia. "But things didn't work out. The U.S. were very well prepared and they are a very strong team."
