SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team and Athletics Department will be holding a shoe drive in support of the needy during its match against UCLA on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Robertson Gymnasium (7 p.m.). The team is encouraging people to drop off shoes and stay for what should be another entertaining match-up between the Gauchos and Bruins.
All of the shoes collected will in turn be donated to Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that sends shoes to people and places in need on five different continents.
Soles4Souls asks for "gently used" shoes or better, which can be deposited in a bin at the entrance of Robertson Gymnasium on match night. Members from all 19 UCSB intercollegiate athletics teams will be dropping by the gym to pitch in and help the cause.
UCSB, ranked 14th in the nation, currently holds a 5-7 overall record and sits in eighth place in the MPSF with a 4-5 mark. Fifth-ranked UCLA is 9-4 on the year and third in the league at 6-3. The Bruins will be looking for redemption as the Gauchos ended their 2007 season by defeating them in an MPSF Tournament quarterfinal match.
