Junior outside hitter Jeff Menzel, who led the No. 11 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to its first victory of the season and moved into 10th place in UCSB program history in career kills, has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week.
In the Gauchos' Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on January 13th against No. 8 Long Beach State, Menzel tallied 25 kills on 55 total attacks, six digs, three blocks and 18.0 points. However, UCSB fell to the 49ers in five sets, 23-30, 30-24, 24-30, 30-26, and 15-9.
Menzel notched another 25 kills on Saturday's match versus UC San Diego, adding four digs, seven blocks, and 31.0 total points. The Gauchos downed the Tritons 26-30, 30-24, 27-30, 30-27, and 15-13.
At 1,107 total kills for his career, Menzel needs just 26 more to surpass Rob Treahy (1994-97) for ninth-place all-time in program history. On January 7th, Menzel became only the 11th Gaucho in program history to reach the 1,000-kill benchmark, accomplishing the feat on his 20th kill of the afternoon versus Cal State Northridge.
Menzel also needs just eight more attacks to move into 8th place all-time in career attack attempts in UCSB annals.
He currently ranks first in the MPSF in kills per set (5.29) and points per set (5.98).
UCSB faces UCLA on Wednesday (1/20) before heading to UC Irvine Friday (1/22). Both matches can be followed live on Gametracker at UCSBgauchos.com.
