UCSB to Host 43rd Annual Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational Jan. 5-6

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UCSB men's volleyball team will open its 2007 regular season by hosting the 43rd Annual Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational Jan. 5-6. Seven other Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) teams will travel to Santa Barbara to participate as the Gauchos take on USC Friday at 1 p.m. in Robertson Gymnasium.

Friday's matches will take place in both Robertson Gymnasium and the Thunderdome. All of Saturday's matches, as well as all of UCSB's matches, will be played in Rob Gym.

UC Irvine enters the tourney as the No. 1 seed and is followed by UCLA, UCSB, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, USC, Pacific, and Stanford.

Seven of the eight teams are ranked in the top-15 in the country. According to the CSTV/AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll, UC Irvine is first, UCLA third, UC Santa Barbara sixth, Cal State Northridge ninth, Long Beach State 10th, USC 12th, and Pacific tied for 14th.

UCLA, the reigning national and MPSF champion, has advanced to the title match in the Elephant Bar Invitational in each of the past four years. Long Beach won the crown in 2006, while the Bruins won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. The Anteaters from UC Irvine took top honors in 2003.

On Friday, each team will play twice - once at 1 p.m .and again at 7 p.m. Saturday's matches will be played at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.

Adult ticket prices are $10 for a one-day pass and $15 for an all-tournament pass. For those 13 and under and UCSB students with a valid ID, a one-day pass is $5 and an all tournament pass is $10. Tickets are available for purchase at each venue both days.

The Gauchos opened their 2007 campaign with a 3-0 exhibition victory over Thompson Rivers University Tuesday. Senior opposite Evan Patak led all players with 18 kills.
