Santa Barbara, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision Wednesday night against MPSF rivals Cal State Northridge, 28-30, 28-30, 30-21, 23-30.
Brian Waite recorded 17 kills to lead the Matadors while teammates Dan Rhodes had 14, Matt Bellante had 11 and Eric Vance had 10.
Junior opposite Evan Patak finished with 25 kills to lead the Gauchos, hitting .356 in the match.
In game one, CSUN came out firing, hitting for a .440 percentage to the Gauchos .333 clip. Despite falling to a 20-17 deficit, the Matadors inched back, regaining the lead at 28-27. A service ace by Isaac Kneubuhl put the Matadors up by two, and a service error by Theo Brunner ended the game in the Matadors' favor.
Game two was more of the same as Northridge and UCSB fought to an 18-18 tie. A 6-2 Matador run put CSUN in the driver's seat and they would never trail again in the game, winning 30-28.
The Gauchos would not go quietly however, fighting back to win the third game 30-21. UCSB hit a whopping .538 in the game to CSUN's .241 clip and never trailed in the game.
UCSB met its fate in game four however as Dan Rhodes would prove to be too much. Rhodes recorded four of his 14 kills in the final game, including one that gave the Matadors a comfortable seven point lead at 27-19.
UCSB was plagued by 24 service errors and 25 attack errors on the night.
The Gauchos return to action Friday, March 31 when they will have a rematch with the Matadors in Northridge.
