CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 9 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team made quick work of Harvard on the first leg of the Gauchos' east coast swing, sweeping the Crimson 30-26, 30-22, and 30-21 Thursday night at Malkin Athletic Center.
Jeff Menzel laid the foundation for the Gauchos (7-8), connecting on eight of 16 swing attempts (.250) with two digs and a block. Freshman Dylan Davis hit .833 (5-0-6) while Jake Rosener followed with a .417 (7-2-12) clip. Vince Devany and Oliver Deutschman split time at the setter position, finishing with 18 and 19 assists, respectively. The Gauchos hit .420 (46-12-81) as a team, their highest percentage of the season.
For the Crimson, Erik Kuld led the way with a match-high 13 kills while Matt Jones added 11 kills. Rob Lothman dished out 27 assists on the night, but Harvard (0-7) managed only a .160 hitting percentage throughout the match.
Thursday's match marks the just the second time this season the Gauchos have swept an opponent. They previously defeated Pacific, 3-0, on January 29 in Stockton. UCSB improves to 6-1 on the road this year.
The Gauchos will head to Springfield College on Friday to take on the Pride in the first round of the 2010 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic. The winner of the UCSB-Springfield match will face the winner of George Mason-Ohio State on Saturday night with the losers also facing each other the same afternoon for the consolation prize.
The Gauchos' next home match is Wednesday, March 3 against UC Irvine at Rob Gym. Match-time is set for 7 p.m.
This season, fans have several options to purchase men's volleyball tickets. Online sales are through Ticket Return. Just go to UCSB gauchos.com, roll over "Tickets", and then click on "Buy Now Print From Home." Then click on the Men's Volleyball section. Additionally, tickets are available by calling the Ticket Office at 805.893.UCSB or by visiting the Ticket Office, located in the Intercollegiate Athletics building on campus. Of course, you can also buy tickets at the Rob Gym entrance beginning one our prior to the start of the match. Individual match ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for youths. UCSB students are free.
