SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball Associate Head Coaches Cullen Irons and Vincent Devany were named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 recipients, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The award recognizes the top 30 up-and-coming coaches at all levels of the sport, and nominees had to be younger than 30 years old in 2018. Of the 30 recipients, 11 are NCAA Division I women's coaches, six in high school/club, four in NCAA Division III and NCAA Division II, two in NCAA Division I-II Men, and one in NCAA Division III Men, Two-Year College and NAIA.
Irons and Devany were the lone recipients from the NCAA Division I-II Men level.
"I'm very happy to see Cullen and Vince get this recognition," said head coach Rick McLaughlin. "They are responsible in so many ways for our success this year and past years. Both are more than ready to be exceptional head coaches in either women's or men's collegiate volleyball."
Both Irons and Devany were teammates on the 2011 UCSB men's volleyball team that advanced to the NCAA Championship and are in their sixth, and fifth season, respectively, as assistant coaches with the Gauchos.
After going 11-13 last season, Santa Barbara has seen a resurgence in 2019 with a 17-7 record and a No. 3 national ranking.
The Gauchos round out the regular season with a pair of matches this week against No. 9 UC Irvine, beginning on the road on Friday, Apr. 12 at 7:00 p.m. The regular season finale and senior night will commence on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in Rob Gym.
