SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Corey Chavers continued his unbelievable stretch of play, leading the No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to wins over No. 4 UCLA and UC San Diego to earn his third Big West Player of the Week honor in the past four weeks.
Chavers was dominant in a thrilling 3-2 upset over No. 4 UCLA on Wednesday night, piling up 20 kills on an incredibly efficient .472 hitting percentage (20-3-36). The Downey, Calif. native also added six digs, a block and three service aces in the win over the Bruins. In Friday's Big West Conference opener at UC San Diego, Chavers propelled the Gauchos to their 10th consecutive victory with a 3-0 sweep behind 12 kills, five digs and two aces.
Chavers hit .379 (32-7-66) over the two matches and averaged 4.00 kills, 1.38 digs and 0.63 aces per set. Coinciding with UCSB's 10-match win streak, he now has 10 straight matches with double-digit kills.
No. 5 UCSB (13-3) will look to extend its streak to 11 straight when it welcomes UC San Diego to Rob Gym on Friday, Mar. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
