SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara middle blocker Brandon Hicks was named Big West Freshman Player of the Week after leading the No. 6 Gauchos to sweeps over Ohio State and Penn State at the AVCA Showcase in Long Beach over the weekend.
The 6-foot-4, Newport Beach, Calif. native piled up 10 total blocks, six kills, five aces and three digs in the wins while hitting an efficient .353 (6-2-17). Hicks set career-highs with seven blocks and five aces in the sweep over the Nittany Lions on Saturday and recorded three kills in each match.
Hicks earns his first career Big West weekly award with the recognition and makes it three weeks in a row that a Gaucho freshman has been honored after Ryan Wilcox won the past two weeks.
Santa Barbara has been well represented in the awards categories this season as senior Corey Chavers earned Big West Player of the Week twice and senior libero Hayden Boehle was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week early in the year.
No. 6 UCSB (11-3) puts its eight-match win streak on the line in its much-anticipated matchup with No. 4 UCLA (10-2) this Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in Rob Gym.
