SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – For the second straight week, senior outside hitter Corey Chavers and freshman outside hitter Ryan Wilcox were recognized by the Big West Conference as the Player of the Week, and Freshman Player of the Week, respectively.
After leading No. 9 UC Santa Barbara to a pair of sweeps over No. 3 BYU last Friday and Saturday, Chavers was honored for the third time in his career while Wilcox garnered his second selection.
Chavers racked up 33 kills on an incredible 5.50 kills per set average while hitting .309 (33-12-68) over the course of the two matches. Against the Cougars on Friday, the Downey, Calif. native tallied 17 kills (5.67 k/s) while hitting an efficient .306 (17-6-36) and added three service aces. Chavers tallied three more aces in Saturday's sweep, while finishing with 16 kills on a .313 (16-6-32) hitting percentage. Seven of his kills came during a furious comeback by UCSB in the third set to secure the sweep.
Wilcox, meanwhile, tied his career-high with 14 kills on Saturday, going without an attacking error on his way to hitting .667 (14-0-21). Wilcox had seven kills in the first set alone to set the tone for the night and finished with seven digs. In Friday night's sweep, Wilcox set a new career-high with four aces, including three in-a-row late in the third frame to seal the straight set victory, while finishing with six digs.
UCSB (9-3) will look to keep its six-match winning streak alive this weekend when it travels to Long Beach for a pair of neutral site matches, beginning against Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m.
