SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – One day after being named Big West Player of the Week for the second time in his career, UC Santa Barbara senior outside hitter Corey Chavers earned his first career Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Week honor, it was announced on Tuesday morning.
The 6-foot-4 Downey, Calif. native led No. 9 UCSB to wins over then No. 9 Lewis and No. 5 Loyola-Chicago with a total of 39 kills on a blistering .459 hitting percentage. Chavers notched 19 kills (.441%) while adding seven digs and four blocks defensively in a five-set win over the Flyers. He continued his hot streak with 20 kills and just one error on 40 attempts (.475%) in an upset win over the Ramblers.
Chavers becomes the 11th Gaucho in program history to be named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week, and the first since Jeff Menzel was awarded on May 2, 2011.
UCSB (7-3) will take its four-game winning streak into its pair of matches against No. 3 BYU this Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. inside Rob Gym.
