Chavers, Wilcox Earn Big West Weekly Honors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior outside hitter Corey Chavers was named Big West Player of the Week and Ryan Wilcox was named Freshman of the Week after both players led No. 9 UC Santa Barbara to a pair of wins over Top-10 ranked opponents last week.

Chavers earned his second career Big West Player of the Week honor after racking up 39 kills (4.33 kills per set) while hitting .459 (39-5-74) and adding nine digs and six total blocks.

In a five-set win over then No. 9 Lewis on Friday, the Downey, Calif. native tallied 19 kills while hitting .441 (19-4-34) with seven digs and four blocks. Three of those blocks came down the stretch in the fifth set to help UCSB pull out the victory. Against No. 5 Loyola-Chicago on Saturday, Chavers finished with 20 kills on .475 hitting efficiency, with just one error on 40 attempts. The senior has been red hot during the Gauchos' current four-game winning streak, averaging 19 kills (4.22 kills per set) and hitting .396 (76-17-149).

Wilcox, meanwhile, garnered his first career Freshman of the Week accolade after totaling 26 kills (2.89 kills per set) while hitting .286 (26-10-56) in the pair of wins. The Honolulu, Hawaii native reached double-figure kills in both matches, posting 12 against No. 9 Lewis before going off for a career-high 14 against No. 5 Loyola-Chicago. Wilcox added four blocks and six digs against the Ramblers and finished with an ace and three digs against the Flyers.

Chavers and Wilcox are the second and third Gauchos to be recognized by the Big West this season after senior libero Hayden Boehle earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on Jan. 7.

UCSB (7-3) looks to continue its winning streak this Friday, Feb. 1 when it welcomes No. 3 BYU to Rob Gym at 7:00 p.m.
