SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior outside hitter Corey Chavers was named Big West Player of the Week and Ryan Wilcox was named Freshman of the Week after both players led No. 9 UC Santa Barbara to a pair of wins over Top-10 ranked opponents last week.
Chavers earned his second career Big West Player of the Week honor after racking up 39 kills (4.33 kills per set) while hitting .459 (39-5-74) and adding nine digs and six total blocks.
In a five-set win over then No. 9 Lewis on Friday, the Downey, Calif. native tallied 19 kills while hitting .441 (19-4-34) with seven digs and four blocks. Three of those blocks came down the stretch in the fifth set to help UCSB pull out the victory. Against No. 5 Loyola-Chicago on Saturday, Chavers finished with 20 kills on .475 hitting efficiency, with just one error on 40 attempts. The senior has been red hot during the Gauchos' current four-game winning streak, averaging 19 kills (4.22 kills per set) and hitting .396 (76-17-149).
Wilcox, meanwhile, garnered his first career Freshman of the Week accolade after totaling 26 kills (2.89 kills per set) while hitting .286 (26-10-56) in the pair of wins. The Honolulu, Hawaii native reached double-figure kills in both matches, posting 12 against No. 9 Lewis before going off for a career-high 14 against No. 5 Loyola-Chicago. Wilcox added four blocks and six digs against the Ramblers and finished with an ace and three digs against the Flyers.
UCSB (7-3) looks to continue its winning streak this Friday, Feb. 1 when it welcomes No. 3 BYU to Rob Gym at 7:00 p.m.
