SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the Big West Conference, according to the annual preseason coaches poll released on Friday afternoon.
With 36 points, including all six first-place votes, reigning Big West and NCAA champion Long Beach State was a unanimous choice for the No. 1 slot in the poll. Hawai'i came in second with 28 while UC Irvine was a close third at 26. UCSB came in at No. 4 with 16 votes followed by CSUN with 11 and UC San Diego with nine.
The Gauchos, ranked No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, return every player that appeared in a match last season including 2018 All-Big West selections Corey Chavers, Keenan Sanders, Connor Drake and Jack Truman.
Primed for a big season, Santa Barbara went a perfect 5-0 in its most recent fall competition with wins over UCLA, USC and CSUN.
UCSB opens the season with four exhibitions in three days, beginning on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 6:00 p.m. against University of Alberta in Long Beach, Calif.
Regular season action begins during the annual Asics Invitational, with the Gauchos opening things up on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 3:00 p.m. against Harvard in Rob Gym.
