SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After leading the UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to wins over USC and UC San Diego, sophomore opposite Keenan Sanders and sophomore setter Randy DeWeese both earned weekly honors from the Big West Conference, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Sanders, a San Diego native, was voted as the league's Player of the Week for the second time this season, while DeWeese picked up his first Big West Defensive Player of the Week award.
"This is a great honor for both Randy and Keenan," said UCSB head coach Rick McLaughlin. "Both of them, alongside our entire team, has been working hard so it's good to see them rewarded like this."
Sanders was the top offensive performer for the team last week, totaling 38 kills on .469 hitting as the Gauchos knocked off USC and UCSD on the road. Despite taking more swings than any other Gaucho, he averaged just one error per set.
Against USC, he collected his second-straight 21-kill match with a .429 hitting percentage, including 12 kills in the final set of a 3-1 victory at the Galen Center. A 2017 Freshman All-American as a middle blocker, Sanders added 17 kills on .517 hitting against the Tritons including nine kills in the third game of a sweep at the RIMAC Arena.
DeWeese put in strong all-around performances against both opponents last week, leading the team with 20 digs and 11 blocks (one solo). The Sacramento native notched double-doubles in both contests (47 assists-10 digs against USC, 29-10 against UCSD) to give him a team-best four on the season.
On the offensive side, DeWeese steered the team to a .362 hitting percentage for the week including a season-best .386 clip against USC. He added six kills on .500 hitting.
Sanders, DeWeese, and the rest of the Gauchos host Fort Wayne and Ball State at Rob Gym on Friday night and Saturday night, respectively, in non-conference action.
