Delson, Sanders Pick Up All-MPSF Honors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara senior outside hitter Jacob Delson and freshman middle blocker Keenan Sanders were both named to the 2017 All-MPSF men's volleyball team, the league announced on Thursday afternoon.

Delson, the Gauchos' top hitter, was named All-MPSF Honorable Mention, while Sanders was named to the All-Freshman Team. It was the first career All-League honor for both.

UCSB's go-to pin hitter for the first time in his career, Delson made the most of opportunities this season. At the conclusion of the regular season, Delson ranked fourth in the country with a 4.24 kills per set average while he came in sixth nationwide with 4.80 points per set.

Entering the year with no 20-kill matches on his resume, he reached that mark seven time season including a career-high 34 kill performance against UC Irvine on Feb. 25, the most single-match kills by a UCSB player since Jeff Menzel in 2010.

Not just a lethal hitter, he ranked eighth in the MPSF in serving (0.32 aces per set) and notched three double-doubles. Delson ended his career with at least 200 kills, 20 aces, and 100 digs in each of his final three seasons.

Despite being a true freshman, Sanders proved himself to be one of the most well-rounded middles in the league in 2017.

Among MPSF middles, he ranked first in digs (0.58 per set) and second in kills per set (2.16). He also ranked second in kills among league freshmen.

Standout performances from the San Diego native included a season-high 14 kills on .632 hitting against UC Irvine on Feb. 25 and a 10-kill performance on a season-best .643 hitting percantage against USC on Jan. 18.

UCSB compiled a 10-16 overall record this season with a 5-13 mark in conference play, competing for a playoff berth down to the final week of the season. The Gauchos are expected to return five of six starters from this year's squad, all of whom are sophomores or younger.
