SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On the first day of the 50th annual UCSB Asics Invitational tournament, the eighth-ranked Gauchos put together a 3-1 record in exhibition pool play to place second in their group and earn the chance to compete for third place in the ten-team tournament tomorrow afternoon.
UCSB opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Pacific, before wrapping up their morning session with a two-set sweep of Cal Baptist.
After the lunch break, the Gauchos slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pool A champion Harvard before rebounding for a three-set victory over Stanford to close out the day.
Placing second in the pool behind Harvard by virtue of tiebreaker rules, the Gauchos will face off against UC San Diego tomorrow in the third place match slated for a 5:30 p.m. start. UC San Diego was one of three teams in Pool B to go 2-2 on Friday, but placed second after all tiebreaking procedures.
Long Beach State, the only team in the tourney to go 4-0 on Friday, will match up with Harvard in the 8 p.m. championship match.
As a reminder, all of Friday's matches were exhibitions and do not count towards overall records. However, Saturday's contests are official matches and will count towards overall records.
