A trio of UC Santa Barbara track and field distance runners competed at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, Calif., Sunday evening as Stephanie Rothstein set the UCSB and Big West Conference record in the 5000 meters. Megan Lewis also ran the 5000 meters and Tetlo Emmen competed in the 800 meters, both in NCAA Regional Qualifying Times.
Rothstein clocked in at 16:12.77 to finish in 7th-place overall and fourth among collegiate athletes. Rothstein's time bettered the previous school and conference record of 16:16.35 set by Lauren Christman at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Rothstein also holds the Big West Conference record in the 10,000 meters. Lewis finished in a NCAA Regional Qualifying Time 16:36.60 for 11th-place overall.
On the men's side, Emmen ran a NCAA Regional Qualifying Time of his own, 1:50.15. earning him a seventh-place finish overall and second among college competitors. This was Emmen's second race in as many days as he won the 800 Saturday in the dual meet between UCSB and Cal Poly.
A trio of Gauchos will travel to Northridge, Calif., next weekend to compete in the 2007 Big West Championships Multi-Events, which includes the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon.
