April 20, 2011

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Senior Amanda Moreno from Escalon, Calif. was named Big West Athlete of the Week for her 5,000m performance at the Mt. SAC meet last weekend. This becomes her third award of the season after being nominated for her performances at the Stanford Invitational and Ben Brown Invitational.

Since her first 5,000m race this season, Moreno has improved by nearly a minute and has broken the 5,000m school record set by Danielle Domenichelli last year. Her time of 15:58.02 is a new conference record and qualifies her to run in the Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 25th in Eugene, Ore. The winner of last year's 5,000m at the US Championships was Lauren Fleshman with a time of 15:28.70. The current American record time is 14:44.8 and the World Record is 14:11.15.

In the spring of 2009 UCSB Athletics launched Dare to Be Great, the strategic vision and mantra for the Gauchos. It is dedicated to increasing support for student-athlete scholarships and support services along with a full facilities enhancement plan. The focus is also on funding women's athletics programs at UCSB, community outreach and developing every student-athlete into a leader.
