With the inclement weather at the Ben Brown Invitational last week, UC Santa Barbara's Chris Ashley and Gabe Mann were still able to produce stellar performances to earn Big West Male Track and Field Athletes of the Week, for the week ending March 13.
Ashley (San Mateo, Calif.) finished the 5,000 meters in third place overall, first NCAA Division I finisher, with a time of 14:25.45. The sophomore distance runner, crossing the finish line 11 seconds faster than his previous personal best, currently leads the Big West in the event.
In his third meet of the year, Mann (Santa Barbara, Calif.) threw the javelin for a distance of 200 feet, 11 inches. The previous week he hit an NCAA Regional mark at the All-Cal Cup with a 204-10 throw. His personal best set at the Home Opener on February 18th, lies at 222-02 feet.
The Gauchos will be competing at two locations this weekend beginning with the Cal St. Northridge Multi's on Thursday and Friday where Danielle DeBeaubien (Sr.) and Katie Kramer (Jr.) will be getting in their first heptathlon of the year. The rest of the squad will travel north to Cal Poly SLO for the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday.
