Emmen Advances to Semi-finals
USA Championships Preview
Tetlo Emmen concluded a great 2006 season when he came up just short of advancing to the finals of the USA Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis, IN. The redshirt Gaucho finished in 6th place, in section two of the Men's 800m this evening in 1:49.70. The top four athletes in both sections went on to qualify to Sunday's final.
Defending Champion and Olympian Khadevis Robinson took the race out and looked like a favorite as he won the 2nd section easily in 1:47.30. Emmen, who was in third place with 200m to go appeared strong, but as Samuel Burley of Asics came around him, he gave him a little bump that put the Gaucho a bit off step. Unable to regain his stride, he faded back in the final 100m to his 6th place finish.
Nonetheless, a fantastic 2006 campaign had the 4th year Gaucho set almost a two second personal best when he raced to a 1:46.89 at the Occidental Invitational in mid May. His mark remains the 4th best time in 2006 for the United States. Making his first appearance at a USA Championships this week, Emmen qualified automatically into the semi-finals after a tactically good quarterfinal race where he finished 2nd in the fourth of four sections, just out kicking 2004 USA Champ and Olympian Johnathon Johnson.
Emmen, will have one more season of eligibility for UCSB, returning for the 2007 season. The NCAA All-American will go into the '06 campaign as one of the top 800m athletes in the country.
