USA Championships Preview
Redshirting Gaucho, Tetlo Emmen automatically advanced to the 800m semifinals this afternoon at the 2006 AT&T USA Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis. The now fifth year UCSB athlete finished 2nd in the fourth of four sections in a time of 1:48.53 outkicking 2004 Olympian and 2003 NCAA National Champion Johnathon Johnson of Reebok to claim the last automatic spot.
A rain delay slowed down the Championships by twenty minutes early in the afternoon, but it did not slow down the Gaucho. Getting out well in 53 seconds through 400m, Emmen stayed in the pack and waited as he has done all year. The group of nine slowed down in the third 200m, coming through 600m in 1:20 even. Then as others faded, he continued to charge around the final turn and into the homestretch. His move into 2nd place proved to be crucial as none of the times in the fourth section were fast enough to move on at-large, denying Johnson who was third in 1:48.77 of a semi-finals appearance. Derrick Peterson of Adidas, 2004 Olympian and 1999 NCAA Champion came across the line first in 1:48.52 just ahead of Emmen.
The top two athletes in each heat advanced automatically with the next best eight times also moving on from the quarter-finals. He will go into the semi's with the 3rd best time in 2006 out of the sixteen remaining men as the group will be split into two heats of eight. Of the marks posted today Emmen will be seeded 7th and with the '06 NCAA Champion failing to qualify to semi's, he is the top ranked collegiate in the field. Defending USA Champion and Olympian, Khadevis Robinson, Three time USA Champion and '03 World Indoor Champion, David Krummenacker among many others have also advanced as they will fight for the final eight spots into finals. Emmen and company will next compete in the semifinals tomorrow, scheduled for 7:30pm Indianapolis.
