EUGENE, Ore. -- The NCAA West Regional concluded Saturday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Four Gauchos competed on the second day of the meet.
UCSB's day began out in the field with the women's high jump, where Barbara Nwaba finished 13th by clearing 5-7 (1.70m). Nwaba missed on her first attempt but cleared her second attempt, which placed her ahead of two athletes who needed three attempts to clear the opening height. It took a jump of 5-8.50 with zero misses to reach the top five.
Scott Finley was able to clear the opening bar in the men's pole vault, but he was unable to clear his seasonal best of 16-7. He placed 27th with his mark of 16-1.25 (4.91m). It took a vault of 17-7 to reach the top five.
Out on the track, Ryan Martin finished eighth in the 800m final with a time of 1:52.12. It was a close race, with the winner crossing the line in 1:49.48. The fifth-place runner clocked a time of 1:50.60.
The final event for the Gauchos was the women's steeplechase, where Katie Voigtlander finished fifth in Section 1 with a time of 11:04.48. There were two sections in the steeplechase, and it's difficult to qualify out of Section 1 since the sections are seeded from slow to fast. As expected, Section 2 went out at a brisk pace and provided all five qualifiers for Nationals.
The NCAA Track & Field Championships will be held from June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
