NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- UCSB had a pair of ninth-place finishes in the Big West Multi-Event Championships, with Nick deBeaubien placing ninth in the decathlon and Lauri Schakett placing ninth in the heptathlon.
Schakett moved up a position on the final day of competition, spurred by a 2:22.68 in the 800m which converted to 788 points in the scoring system, her highest total of the competition. She ended up with 4290 total points, which was just behind Sherrina Lofton from Cal State Northridge, who had 4325 points.
deBeaubien set a new personal best in the decathlon with 6010 points, but it wasn't quite enough to sneak into the eighth and final scoring position. His best score in an event was a 730 in the 110 high hurdles, where he had a time of 16.02. He was also the winner of the 1500m race, which was the final event of the competition. His time of 4:40.38 converted to 678 points.
The winner of the heptathlon was Sharon Day from Cal Poly, who garnered 5624 points and collected 10 team points for the Mustangs. Chris Richardson blew away the competition in the decathlon, finishing more than 400 points ahead of his nearest competitor. His total was 7461 points, and he collected 10 team points for the 49ers.
