Oregon Relays Conclude With Good Results for the Gauchos
April 25, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Relays continued Saturday afternoon at historic Hayward Field, and the Gauchos continued to improve their marks with only three weeks remaining until the Big West Championships.
The action on the track was highlighted by Ryan Martin improving his 800m time to 1:49.35, which moves him up to fourth on the Gaucho all-time list. He placed sixth in Section 1, where all eight runners finished sub-1:52.
Barbara Nwaba was the winner of Section 2 in the 400m hurdles, edging two runners at the line to clock a time of 62.01. Nwaba moves up to fifth on the Gaucho all-time 400m hurdles list. She also tied for second in the high jump with a clearance over 5-5.75 (1.67m). Christina Nowak cleared that bar as well.
In the shot ring, Scott Anderson improved to 57-7.50 (17.56m), just over half-a-foot shy of his UCSB record of 58-2. Anderson placed second in the meet, and will likely retain his position at second on the Big West list.
The men's 4x400m relay had their best showing of the season, with their time of 3:13.39 good for fourth in the meet. The squad of Max Bellissimo, Jason Newland, Alvin Go and Ryan Martin move up a spot on the Conference list, now holding the fourth-best time in the Big West. They are only .09 away from the third position.
Saturday's competition was staged in front of a meet record crowd of 6,901.
Next Saturday, May 2, the Gauchos will be hosting a dual meet against Cal Poly. The meet will take place at Pauley Track on the UCSB campus. Schedules and entries will be posted on UCSBgauchos.com later in the week.
