SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The latest edition of Gaucho Track and Field got underway this afternoon with the second annual Gaucho Round-Up, a quad-meet between UCSB, Claremont, Pepperdine and Westmont. In the team scoring the Gauchos came out on top on both the men's and women's sides, with 235 points for the men and 230 points for the women.
Scott Smith opened his season with a couple of wins, taking first in both the 1500m and the 3000m. His time in the 3000m was 8:25.62, which earns him another spot on the UCSB all-time lists. Smith now sits at fifth in the 1500m and 10th in the 3000m. Additionally, his time in the 1500m of 3:53.99 meets the Big West standard and earns him an early qualification to the Conference Meet.
Another strong performance came from freshman Irene Kujore. She had a double-win in the throwing events, which included throwing 146-11 (44.78m) to win the discus. Her mark was a Conference-qualifying mark that places her at ninth on the UCSB all-time discus list. She also competed in the shot put and the hammer throw, throwing 40-6 (12.35m) to win the shot and 134-9 (41.08m) to place second in the hammer.
David Hoff was a busy athlete this afternoon, competing in four events. He had a good day in the high jump by clearing 6-8.75 (2.05m), which qualifies for Big West and is just five centimeters shy of the NCAA Regional qualifying standard. The clearance ties his personal best. Hoff also competed in the horizontal jumps and the 4x100m relay. He took second place in the long jump at 20-11 (6.38m), and second in the triple jump at 41-9.50 (12.74m).
