Smith grabbed a pair of All-Conference honors at the Big West Championships by running the 1500m/5k double...Began Saturday by taking third in the 1500m with a time of 3:48.14, and then ended the day by taking second in the 5000m with a time of 14:26.97, which was less than half a second behind winner Chad Hall of UC Riverside...Set his personal best in the 5000m at the Stanford Invitational, where he ran 14:03.28...That time is the third-fastest in UCSB history...Set his personal best in the 1500m at the Mt. SAC Invitational with a time of 3:44.28, which places him second on the UCSB all-time list...Smith decided to bypass the 1500m and run a fresh 5000m at the NCAA West Regionals, but he finished a disappointing 23rd with a time of 14:46.60...Won the 1500m and 3000m at the Big West Challenge Cup with times of 3:47.66 and 8:27.60, respectively.

NCAA Regional Qualifier
Made his first appearance in the NCAA Regionals, competing in the 1500m alongside current Gaucho recordholder Mike Chavez...Smith gained valuable experience at Regionals and was only two seconds behind the winner of his heat...Ran his personal best in the steeplechase at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, coming across the line in ninth with a time of 9:19.46.
Unable to get to High School fitness level, Smith nonetheless posted a good 1500m time of 3:56.60 at the Cal Poly SLO - UCSB Dual with a hairline fracture in the elbow after he fell during the Mt. Sac Invitational. He also gave the steeplechase a go as a naturally smooth hurdler. Smith would notch a good 9:29 at the Big West Challenge Cup, qualifying for the Big West Championships.
Smith had a breakout senior year posting some of the top times in the state of California. He had the ninth fastest 1600m mark with a 4:12.25, which he got en route to winning the Southern Section Div. I Championships. A week later he would race the sixth fastest 3200m mark in the state at the SS Masters meet to advance to the state championships with a mark of 9:06.43...In 2005 he was the Orange County Champion at 1600m with a personal best performance at the time of 4:13.97, adding to it later in the day with a win in the 3200m. At the 2004 State finals in cross country, Smith finished 40th overall.
Smith is majoring in environmental studies with a minor in education...Is considering becoming a high school teacher and coach...Is a surfer...Lists "The Princess Bride" and "Swingers" as his favorite movies.
