Dealing with a bout of anemia in the middle section of the season which took him out of some key races, he bounced back while also adding a new event to his arsenal, the 3,000m steeplechase. At the Mt. SAC invitational he went out and ran just shy of the Regional qualifying mark in the steeple, finishing in 9:08.32. He got the mark at home versus Cal Poly two weeks later where he dipped under the nine-minute barrier, winning in 8:59.26. At the Big West Championships, he showcased his best racing yet, finishing second to one of the nation's best steeplechasers, then came back the next day to almost win the 1500m. The Utah altitude proved to be too much for the Gaucho junior as he finished 12th at the NCAA West Regional Championships after going in ranked ninth.
2005 XC Recap: One of the Gaucho's most consistent athletes, Chavez finished 5th at the Big West Championships, his 2nd All-Conference finish and set a personal 8k personal best of 24:03. Led the Gauchos at Regionals finishing 33rd. Early in the season set the UCSB Lagoon course record winning the home opener in 24:29.

2005 Track & Field Recap: Posted impressive performances throughout the season. Early in the season, Mike set a new Personal Record in the 5000m at the All-Cal Challenge Cup. At the Stanford Invitational he ran the 4th fastest All-Time 1500m (3:47.61) and qualified for the NCAA West Regionals. At the Conference Championships Chavez helped the team by scoring in the 1500m with a 6th place finish.

2004 XC Recap: Coming off of a good 2004 Track campaign, Chavez set a 8K PR of 24:23.8 at the Big West Championships finishing All-Conference in 6th place aiding a strong Gaucho showing in Riverside.

2004 Track & Field Recap: One of the best freshman seasons for the Gauchos all-time, Mike set personal bests in all events. At the Mt. Sac Invitational he ran 3:51.70 for 1500m and finished 5th at the Big West Championships in that event. After trials and finals in the 1500m at the Championships, Chavez went on to set a 5000m personal best of 15:01.

2003 XC Recap: Mike stepped up as Santa Barbara's 4th man at the Pre-National Meet, covering the 8k course in 25:16...finished 20th at the Big West Conference Championship, helping the team to a runner-up finish. Ran 25:11 at the Stanford Invite.

High School Notes: Mike completed an outstanding HS career with a 6th place finish in the 1600m at the 2003 CA State Finals...Chavez won the 2003 CIF SS D1 title at 3200m and was runner-up at 1600m...had an amazing triple at the 2003 Orange County Championships, finishing 2nd at 800m (1:55.65), 2nd at 1600m (4:13.96) and 3rd at 3200m (9:23.17)...finished 4th in the Invitational section of the 1600m at the 2003 Arcadia Invitational in a personal best 4:12.46... finished 5th at the 2002 CA State DI XC Meet at Woodward Park, covering the 5k course in 15:26.1...as a HS JR in the spring of 2002, Mike was the runner-up in both the 1600m (4:14.47) and 3200m (9:09.52) at the CIF SS DI finals, and finished 10th in the 3200m at the CA State Meet.
