| Position: | Volunteer Assistant Coach |
Robert Beamer returns to the Gauchos as a volunteer assistant
for the 2012 track and field season. After spending the past three
years at the University of Notre Dame as a graduate student and
assistant coach, Beamer will be assisting Coach Priester with the
sprints and hurdles core.
Beamer began his teaching and coaching career at Francis Parker
School in San Diego, where he assumed directorship of the track
program for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. At Francis Parker, he led
the Lancers to two consecutive second place finishes in the
competitive San Diego Coastal league. Beamer continued his coaching
as the sprints/hurdles assistant at Mater Dei Catholic High school
from 2004 2005 working under Gaucho alum Mike Lebold, where he also
taught Spanish. In 2005, Beamer was introduced as the head coach of
Bishop Diego's cross country and track programs, acting as head of
the religion department and coaching basketball. For the 2007 and
2008 seasons, Beamer was brought on UCSB's staff to assist Coach
Kenyan with the sprints and hurdlers core and certain
administrative
projects. For the past three years while at Notre Dame, Beamer
served as the head coach of the University's Freshman Rowing team,
leading the Irish to several apical finishes. In 2011, Beamer was
the recipient of the Timothy Scully Award for leadership through
service awarded to one Notre Dame student for outstanding
involvement between the Notre Dame and South Bend
communities.
As an undergraduate, Beamer was a two sport athlete at the
University of San Diego, where he earned all conference honors in
cross country in a fiercely competitive WCC. During the Spring
semesters he earned letters as an oarsmen for the Toreros, prior to
the school's catalyzing a Spring track and field program. In 2002,
he was selected as the recipient of the Patsy Shumway Award, given
to one student athlete demonstrating excellence in extracurricular
activities. Beamer graduated from San Marcos High School in 1999.
He possesses a Bachelors degree in Political Science and History
(University of San Diego, 2003), a Masters in practical theology
(University of San Diego, 2008), as well as a Masters in systematic
theology (University of Notre Dame, 2011). Beamer currently logs
between 40 and 50 hours a week working for the initiatives of the
Tri Counties Regional Center (Santa Barbara). In 2008, he was the
fifth American to finish the Los Angeles Marathon with a time of
2:37:09 and continues to train with hopes of improving his own
technique and time.
