Competing in six meets during his sophomore campaign, Zhang brought depth to the Gauchos javelin corps. Opened the year with a 156' effort at the All-UC. Came back and threw 168'11 at the Big West Double Dual, placing fifth. Threw 173'11 at the Big West Challenge, placing seventh and scoring three important points in the team battle. Recorded a 182'7 toss at the Bryan Clay Invite. Finished with a mark of 180'9 at the Cal Poly Dual, placing fifth in a meet where six men threw over 180 feet, a first in the Dual. Delivered a lifetime best throw of 186'10 at the Big West Championships, placing tenth overall in one of the strongest javelin finals in conference history. 

Zhang threw the javelin in seven meets for the Gauchos, claiming the victory at the UC Riverside Dual.  Recorded a seasons best throw at the UC Riverside Spring Break Invite with a throw of 183'2. Eclipsed 51m in six competitions. Took 10th at the Big West Championships, throwing 171'8. 

Zhang attended West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North in New Jersey. He was named to the 2012 All Mercer County Track and Field Team. He was a two time NJ Indoor State Championship qualifier in the shot put and qualified for the outdoor meet, the NJ Meet of Champions in the event as a senior. Holds the West Windsor-Plainsboro school record in the javelin. High school coaches were: Erik Bernstein, Michael Drake and Terrence Glover. 

Parents are Frank and Anney Zhang...Has one sister, Valerie...Majoring in Actuarial Science...Hometown is Princeton Junction, NJ...Enjoys snowboarding...Most memorable athletic achievement was qualifying for the NJ Outdoor Meet of Champions (State Championships).
