George Baier accomplished "The Triple" at the 2016 Big West Track Championships, scoring in the 1500m (3rd) , 3000m Steeple (3rd), and 5000m (5th). On top of all that, he qualified to his first NCAA Regional Meet with a 1500m PR of 3:45.56, 7 seconds faster than the year before. When Baier toes the line, you know he means business.
2016 Cross Country
Competited in six meets for the Gauchos. Dropped a 24:13.9 at the UC Riverside Invitational for a 7th place finish as the #1 scorer for the team on the day. Clocked a sub-24 performance at the Stanford Invitational with a 23:51.8 for 14th. Recorded his highest placing at conference with a 10th place finish in 25:29.4 in less than ideal conditions, helping the Gauchos to finish 2nd as a team.
Competed in nine meets during his breakthrough junior track campaign. Lowered his 1500m PR to 3:45.56 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, where he won his heat wire to wire. Finished on the podium in the 3000m steeple, and had less than 15 min rest before he qualified to the final of the 1500, where he also finished top 3. Concluded the meet with a 5th place in the 5000m as the Gauchos claimed an unprecendented 3rd-6th places. Competed in the NCAA West Regional 1500m where he finished 45th.
2015 Cross Country
Competed in 6 races. Recorded an 8k PR of 24:40.1 at Pre Nationals. Was the Gaucho's #6 runner at the Big West Championships, where he finished 19th. Had an impressive showing at his first NCAA West Regional, scoring as #4 for the Gauchos, placing 56th overall in 32:09.
Competed in nine meets during his sophomore track campaign. Cut nearly 27 seconds off his first steeple performance of the year at the All-UC to his last at the Big West Championships. Had his first breakthrough performance at the Big West Challenge, placing second in the 3,000m steeple with a time of 9:15.40. Came back the next week at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invite and lowered his 800m best to 1:52.47, indicating another drop was imminent. At the Big West Championships, Baier helped the Gauchos to a historic 1-2-4 finish by placing fourth with a personal best steeple time of 9:08.25.
2014 Cross Country
Competed in nine cross country races in his first fall season with the Gauchos. Placed 13th at the Lagoon Race with an 8k time of 25:56.17. Ran No. 7 for the Gauchos at UC Riverside, placing 52nd in 25:27.6. Again lowered his best at the Stanford Invite to 25:19.7, placing 118th. Ran his season best 8k at Santa Clara, placing 59th with a 24:39.6 clip - averaging 4:57.6 miles. Ran No. 3 for the Gauchos in Santa Clara. Placed 40th at the Big West Championships, helping the Gauchos win the team title for the first time in school history. Recorded a time of 25:32.2 at BW.
Baier took the line in eleven races for the Gauchos during his freshman track campaign. Opened the season with a 4:17.87 mile at the Gauchos Round-Up before stepping up distance later in the season. Ran a 1:55.21 800m PR at the All-Cal before taking to the barriers in his first steeplechase effort at the UC Riverside Spring Break Invite where he clipped off a 9:46.46. He ran a 9:32.39 at the Big West Challenge, taking fourth in a talented field. Turned in an impressive Big West debut at the outdoor track championships, taking seventh for the Gauchos after setting a new personal best in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:23.60. Baier came back in the 5,000m and narrowly missed the scoring column, finishing in ninth with PR 15:10.41.
Attended Menlo-Atherton High School in Portola Valley. Was voted his High School's Athlete of the Year. Was apart of Menlo-Atherton's school record setting DMR squad. Had a breakthrough senior year, clipping off a 4:16.54 1600m at the CCS Championships. Won the CCS 1600m title as a junior, earning a qualifying bid to the CIF State Championships. Earned All-League Honors in Cross Country and Track and Field. High school coaches were Eric Wilmurt and Alan Perry.
Parents are Carl Baier and Tamara Suden...Majoring in Mechanical Engineering...Aspires to be a product designer...Also played soccer, basketball and was on a club swim team...Favorite movie is Django Unchained...Favorite athletic memory was being the last qualifier into the 2012 CCS 1600m Championships and ending up taking the win...Can complete a 1 handed push up...Favorite aspect of college track, "Competing not only to see who is the most physically fit, but who is the most mentally tough."
