After claiming Big West Silver in the 3,000m Steeplechase as a sophomore, Avila repeated the effort in 2015, helping the Gauchos take the top-two conference spots in the event. Using back-to-back sub-nine minute efforts in the event over the course of seven days, Avila qualified for the NCAA First Round with a personal best time of 8:59.40.
2016 Cross Country
Competited in six meets for his final cross campaign as a Gaucho. Turned some heads at the Stanford Invitational by dropping a 23:36.4 for the 8k course, finishing 6th overall. Clocked in another hot performance by running 23:45.9 at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational for 5th. Captured his highest finish at the Big West Conference Meet with a 4th place finish in 24:54.7. Closed out the season with one last huge performance at the NCAA West Regional Meet where he finished in the top-25 for All-Region honors with a 19th place finish in 30:04.5.
Redshirt year. Dropped a full six seconds off his 1500m personal best running 3:53.42 at the 38th Annual Aztec Invitational. Also lowered his 5000m best by twenty one seconds, running 14:23.79 at the 2016 Oxy Invitational.
2015 Cross Country
#5 for the Gauchos at the Big West Championship, finishing 13th overall. This performance secured the second Big West Championship in a row for the Men's team. Set a new personal best for 8k of 24:21.0 at the Pre-Nationals Meet in Louisville, KY. Finished the season with a 32:47.9 performance at the NCAA West Regional Meet in Seattle.
After opening the season with a 9:16.70 steeple win at the All-UC, Avila went on to record back-to-back sub-nine efforts in the event, both within a one week span. Breaking out at the Big West Challenge Cup, Avila unloaded over the last three laps, breaking the tape at 8:59.40. One week later he found himself toeing the line at the Mt. Sac Relays. Running in the Collegiate/Open section, he again dipped under nine minutes, finishing at 8:59.60 to place seventh overall. Avila now ranks #8 All-Time in UCSB history in the 3000m steeplechase. Also lowered his 5k track PR to 14:44.41 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Executed an inspiring performance at the conference championships, running side by side with teammate Bryce Rausa for the latter half of the 3000m steeplechase which was rewarded with another 2nd place finish, going 1-2 with Rausa in a time of 9:02.99.
2014 Cross Country
Ran #6 for the Gauchos at the Big West Championship, finishing in 11th overall with a 24:33.3 8k effort. Avila finished ahead of five other teams' #1 runners at the championship meet, illustrating the Gauchos' depth enroute to their team title. Steadily worked his way up through the running order after running #9 at the UC Riverside Invitational to open his sophomore season with a 25:38.5 performance. Broke into the top-five at Pre Nationals, finishing in the #5 slot with a 25:49.4 clip, placing 156th overall. Ran #7 for the Gauchos at the NCAA West Regional with a 31:24.0 showign over the 10k course.
Avila contested a total of 12 races during the outdoor campaign, finishing in the top-five six times. PR'd in each of his five outings in the 3000m steeplechase. Ran a personal best at the Big West Championship in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:10.03, capturing the silver medal. Took an important 2nd for the Gauchos at the Cal Poly Dual in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:14.10.
2013 Cross Country
Ran in four races for the Gauchos. Turned in an eye opening performance at the Big West Championships- placing 20th overall and the fifth freshman overall to break the tape. Ran in the No. 6 slot for the Gauchos at the Big West meet. Finished 86th at the NCAA West Regional meet with a 10k time of 31:38.9, again running No. 6 for the Gauchos.
Set a lifetime best in the 3,000m steeple at the Cal Poly Dual Meet with a time of 9:36.06 to take third and help the Gauchos win a close meet. His second appearance in the steeple came at the Big West Championships where he took 9th and clipped a 9:37.20. Set a lifetime best in the 5000m at the UC Irvine Spring Break meet with a time of 14:56.09. His 10000m PR was set at the Cal Nevada Championships enroute to a 6th place finish at 31:08.14.
