San Diego, Calif- Freshman Jackson Bright won the men's 10,000m to lead the Gauchos at the Cal Nevada Championships in the first day of competition. Bright recorded a time of 31:03.77 in his 10k debut. After leading the chase pack for 9,000m, Bright reeled in the leader and outsprinted the field to the line, winning an electric race as the sunset over La Jolla Beach.
Kicking off the meet earlier in the day, Albert Hughes uncorked a new lifetime best in the men's hammer with a heave of 191'2. Hughes took second overall in the competition and will compete in the men's discus Saturday afternoon.
Evan Walker led a group of Gaucho sprinters into Saturday's final, recording a 10.79 100m time.
Sean Johnson qualified for Saturday's final in the men's 110HH with a time of 14.55.
Bailey Miller ran a tactical race for the Gauchos on the women's side, taking sixth in the 5,000m in a time of 18:00.22.
In other event news: Katie Lee hit a mark of 11'5.75 in the women's pole vault, Denley Rodriguez fired off a shot put mark of 50'2.5 and Jade Fuller ran a time of 2:16.78 in the women's 800m.
