UC Santa Barbara's Marquis Caldwell and Mitchell Haag swept the men's portion of the Big West Track and Field Athletes of the Week awards with standout performances at the Cal/Nevada Championships. As a team, UCSB finished in third at the UC San Diego hosted meet, but Caldwell and Haag both made first place efforts in their events.
Caldwell was named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week after finishing in first place in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 46.95. Not only was that tops at the meet, but it also currently ranks first overall in the Big West and eighth in the West Region. The senior showed his prowess in two team events too, as he anchored two winning relay teams in the 4x100 and the 4x400. His 41.32 split in the 4x100 earned UCSB the victory with four-tenths of a second ahead of Sacramento State.
Mitchell Haag was already named Field Athlete of the Meet at the Cal/Nevada Championships for his winning leap in the high jump. Now, the senior's personal-best 7-02.50 earned him the title of Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The jump was about 1.18 inches more than his previous career-high set at last year's Big West Championships. Haag's mark is tied the eighth-best in the nation.
The UCSB Track & Field team will continue their season this weekend at the Tommie Lister Invitational hosted at Cal State Los Angeles. The heptathletes and decathletes will be competing against Olympic champion Ashton Eaton and UCSB alumnus Barbara Nwaba among others at the star-studded Sam Adams multis this weekend at Westmont.
