Nine Gaucho Men Head to Austin This Weekend for NCAA West Preliminaries


INDIANAPOLIS  –  The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced the participants in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championship Competition.

The Preliminary Championship Competitions will be held May 24-26th.  The East region will be held at the North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. and the West region at Texas in Austin, Texas. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Championships held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.

SANTA BARBARA--UCSB will send eleven men and seven women to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds this weekend in Austin, Texas. 

Ryan Martin qualifies for the 800m event with his time of 1:44.77, currently the second fastest time in the entire NCAA. Freshman Syan Vaziri joins Martin with his qualifying time of 1:50.07. Both Vaziri and Martin won Big West Athlete of the Week honors for their performance in the 800m this season. 

The Gaucho's 4x400m relay team consisting of Mikael Powers, Karlon Johnson, Jordan Scott and Ryan Martin have also qualified to race this weekend after running 3:09.67 at the Big West Conference Championships. 

Mitchell Haag and Mike Larocca who went 1-2 in the Big West Conferece Championship have both qualified to compete in the high jump event. Haag set a lifetime best of 7-1.5 at Conference will be seeded sixth in the first heat whereas Larocca's mark of 6-11 is seeded 8th in the second flight.

Alex Umstead will be competing in both the shot put and hammer throw events. Umstead's farthest mark this season was 57-7.25, and threw 196-11 in the hammer throw. Michael Guerra will compete in the javelin with his mark of 219-1.5.

Derek Masterson who will be competing in the decathlon with his lifetime best score of (7,558).
