IRVINE, Calif.--UCSB's Freshman middle distance runner Shyan Vaziri was recognized for his individual efforts this year by the Big West Conference who awarded him the Big West Male Freshman Athlete of the Year and shares the honors with Jahmani Lockett of Long Beach State.
Vaziri made his mark on the track his freshman year by making his presence known in UCSB's deep line up of middle distance runners, specifically Senior Ryan Martin, who currently holds the second fastest 800m time in the entire nation. Vaziri, a San Diego, Calif. native improved his time from his first colleigate race in the 800m, finishing in 1:52.24 at the Cal Poly Invite to 1:50.21 at the Occidental Invite for a new personal record and moving him onto the number 8th spot in the UCSB record books. Vaziri would also significantly improve his 1,500m time from 3:52.16 to 3:45.71 and placing fourth at Conference. Vaziri's 1,500m time moves him all the way up to third in the all-time record books. With big footsteps in the 800m to fill, Vaziri appears to be on the fast track to success.
