    Irvine, Calif. - Four Big West track and field athletes were named to the annual USTFCCCA All-America First Team following their success at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last week. Three additional student-athletes received All-America Second Team honors and five field participants were placed on the All-American Honorable Mention list.

  • Ryan Martin Punches His Ticket to NCAA Championships

    Ryan Martin blazed through the 800m semi-finals on Saturday to qualify for the NCAA Divsion 1 Championships June 6-9 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Martin had the second fastest time, crossing the finish with a time of 1:47.49. Ricky West of the University of Missouri had the fastest semi-finals time at 1:46.65.
  • Justine Diaz Qualifies for the 800m Semis After Day 1 of NCAA Preliminaries

    Senior Justine Diaz has qualified to compete in NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 6-9 after her performance in the 800m in the preliminary round on Thursday. Diaz ran a 2:07.26 to finish top three in the first heat which earned her an automatic qualification.

    The UCSB track and field team picked up several post Big West Conferece awards on Wednesday with UCSB Head Coach Pete Dolan being named Big West Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side. In addition, Barbara Nwaba was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year while Shyan Vaziri was awarded co-Big West Freshman Male Athlete of the Year.
  • Gaucho Men Win Big West Championship and Several Individual Titles

    Against all odds, the UCSB men's track and field team rallied together to win their first Big West Championship...in over 40 years. But in a sport that often touts individual victories, this weekend was truly a team effort, an effort that in the end has made all the difference. The UCSB men concluded competition Saturday afternoon with a total of 179 points to defeat the previous defending conference champion, Long Beach State who scored 150 points.

    The men's track and field team had an amazing team performance after day one of the Big West Conference Finals held at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium. Several of the men claimed individual conference titles and set new personal records. The Gauchos currently have a very generous lead in total team points over its conference competitors with 105 points compared to UC Riverside in second with 44 points.

    The UCSB Gauchos will head down to UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium this weekend for the remainder of the Big West Conference Championships, May 11-12. Last year Long Beach State University won the men's division while the California State University-Northridge won the women's division. The Gauchos are looking in pretty good shape and hungrier than ever to reclaim their title.

    The UCSB Gaucho men nabbed two Athlete of the Week awards awarded by the Big West Conference--Derek Masterson for becoming the 2012 Big West Decathlon Champion and Shyan Vaziri for his performance in the 1,500m at the Occidental Invitational.
  • Masterson Claims Big West Decathlon Victory, Powers Second on Podium

    The Gaucho decathlon squad had quite the showing this past weekend, with Derek Masterson leading the competition again on day two to win his first Big West Decathlon Championship. Masterson totalled 7,355 while teammate Mikael Powers scored 6,966 to finish second on the podium. Senior Josh Codding rounded out his track career with a hard-faught seventh place finish and a total score of 6,389 to assist the Gauchos for a combined team score of 20-points.

    Derek Masterson sits in first place after day one of the decathlon at the Big West Multi-event Championships, held at UC Irvine's track. Both the men and women currently lead their respective disciplines after day one of compeition. Masterson has compiled a score of 3,872 after five events.
  • UCSB Men Dominate Cal Poly Dual, Claim Several Individual Victories

    Notable performances today were highlighted by Barbara Nwaba who competed in the 100m hurdles, high jump and javelin events, and winning all three in clear fashion. In the throws, Irene Kujore had a great performance winning both the shot put and discus events while Alex Umstead lead the men's hammer throw and shot put events. Mitchell Haag captured another victory in the high jump while the vertical jumps were lead by John Walsh in the long jump and Arthur Dyson in the triple jump. In the running events, Ryan Martin highlighted the 400m for a new lifetime best time while Shyan Vaziri lead the men's 1,500m and breaking another PR.

    The majority of the UCSB track and field team competed on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invite in Azsua, Calif. with two victories, one on the women's and one on the men's side. On Friday, two Gaucho middle distance runners competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
  • Anthony Masci Sets New PR in 3k Steeple, Finishes Top 10 at Mt. SAC

    Anthony Masci highlighted the men's distance race in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Thursday. Masci clocked in 9:04.52 for a new personal best time, placing eighth out of 24 runners.
  • Another Big West Athlete of the Week Award for Ryan Martin's 800m Performance

    Earlier today, Ryan Martin earned Big West Honors for his performance in the 800m at the Big West Challenge Cup this past weekend. This is Martin's second time earning the Big West Male Track Athlete of the Week which he after clocking in the second fastest time in the country at the Cal/Nevada Championships. The Senior Lake Forest, Calif. native clocked in a time of 1:50.87 in the 800m, helping the men's team to a second place finish at the Big West Challenge Cup.
  • Men's Track Give Tremendous Effort to Place 2nd at Big West Challenge

    Despite having the meet rescheduled due to weather conditions, Gaucho women got off to a great start and defended their Big West Challenge title at the Titan track on Sunday while the Gaucho men finished second to Long Beach State. Among the other schools at the meet were UC Irvine and host CSU Fullerton.
  • Rain, Rain, Go Away: Big West Challenge Postponed Till Sunday

    Due to less than ideal weather conditions, the 20th annual Big West Challenge which was slated to start on Friday has been postponed until Sunday, Apr. 15. There were be a new revised schedule with start times all three hours earlier. The field events will kick off with the hammer throw at 11:30am on Sunday. The first track event will be the 3000 meter steeplechase which will begin on 2 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Gaucho Men Win Cal/Nevada Championship, Women Eighth

    For the first time ever, UC Santa Barbara men’s track and field team won the title at the Cal/Nevada Track & Field Championship held at Claremont Scripps College. The Gaucho women finished eighth.
  • Masterson Ranked 6th in Nation for Decathlon, Wins Big West Honors

    Derek Masterson was awarded with the Big West Athlete of the Week honors today after his performance at the Sam Adams Invitational last week. The Placerville, Calif. native scored a 7558 in the Decathlon, which automatically qualifies Masterson for the NCAA Championship, and ranks him sixth in the nation.

    UC Santa Barbara traveled to Palo Also last weekend to compete in the 2012 Stanford Invitational. The meet, held Friday and Saturday, April 6 & 7, included hundreds of outstanding athletes.
  • Masterson, Nwaba Shine at Sam Adams Multi-Events Meet

    UC Santa Barbara senior Barbara Nwaba broke the all-time Big West Conference record in the record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,986 at the Sam Adams Multi-Events Meet last week at Westmont College. Nwaba’s score ranks her at No. 1 in the NCAA and surpassed the Olympic Trials A Standard and hit the Olympic Games B standard.
