Martin and Scherer Represent UCSB at USA Outdoor National Championships

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Ryan Martin and Freshman Josh Scherer will represent the UCSB track and field team at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. June 23-26. This will be Martin's second and Scherer's first appearance at a USA Outdoor National Championship.

Redshirt Junior Barbara Nwaba will be competing in the heptathlon as an unattached athlete with her score of 5,714 which she earned at the Claremont Classic on May 14. Nwaba will return as a full roster athlete for both the indoor and outdoor season in the fall.

Ryan Martin's fastest time in the 800m during the 2011 outdoor season was 1:45.34 which he ran at the Big West Conference Championships. This time surpasses the 'A' qualifying standard which is set at 1:47.50. Martin will compete in heat four of the preliminary round where the top 16 advance plus the next four fastest times. The 800m preliminary rounds are set to begin at 3:50pm PST on Thursday June 23rd.

Josh Scherer qualified for the Junior USA Outdoor National Championships with his hammer throw mark he threw at the Big West Conference Championships. Scherer's mark of 172-2 surpassed the hammer throw #16 standard which is set at 170-3. Scherer will compete in flight two where the top eight marks determine the final order. The hammer throw is scheduled to begin at 10:50am PST on Friday June 24th.

Barbara Nwaba qualified for the 'B' standard in the heptathlon which is set at 5,600 points. The first event will be the 100m hurdles at 9:45am on Saturday, June 25th followed by the high jump at 10:45am, shot put at 12:35pm, 200m at 1:40pm. The rest of the events will resume on Sunday, June 26. 

The Senior Outdoor Championships will be broadcast on ESPN2, June 24 11:00pm-1:00am ET, Universal, June 25 3:00-4:30pm ET, NBC, June 25 5:00-6:00pm ET, Universal June 26 3:00-4:)0pm ET and NBC, June 26 5:00-6:00pm ET.
