TULSA, Okla. - UC Santa Barbara's Philip Therp, ranked 83rd in the nation, defeated Drake University's Maor Zirkin, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the third round of the All-America Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., on Tuesday.
Therp, who defeated Virginia Tech's Pedro Graber on Monday, needs one more win to advance into the main draw of 64 which will begin on Thursday. He will play USC's Robert Farah on Wednesday morning for an opportunity to join the 48 players who had direct acceptance into the main of 64.
According to UCSB head coach Marty Davis, Therp was at his mental best in the easy win over Zirkin on Tuesday.
"Philip is playing his most intelligent tennis to date," Davis said. "His shot selection is vastly improved. He is really thinking about his shots and it paid off in an easy win."
The time of the match between Therp and Farah had yet to be determined, but it was expected to be in the morning at the University of Tulsa.
