INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - UC Santa Barbara freshman Philip Therp was selected as one of 64 individual singles players that will compete in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, it was announced Wednesday. After leading the Gauchos to a second consecutive Big West Championship last weekend, Therp will now have a shot at the nations' top honor for an individual singles player.
In addition to the 64 singles players, 32 doubles teams were selected to compete in the NCAA Championships to be held May 23-28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia. The event follows the completion of the team championship, which runs from May 17-22.
The selection of individuals is based on the prescribed criteria listed in the championships handbook and approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships was awarded to conferences with one or more singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125.
Therp will be the Big West Conference's lone representative in the 2007 championships.
The native of Birkeroed, Denmark was the named the 2007 Big West Freshman of the Year Tuesday when the annual all-conference awards were unveiled, following in the footsteps of teammate Bijan Hejazi who took home top freshman honors in 2006. Therp finished 6-4 at No. 3 singles this year and missed 10 matches during the early part of this season with a left wrist injury. Returning to the courts after six weeks on the sidelines, he finished the season with one hand and went 4-3.
Therp and the Gauchos (6-18) will take on USC (20-2) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Championships May 11. The match is tentatively scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Southern Cal's Marks Stadium.
