SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara junior Anders Dalskov was named the Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, it was announced Wednesday. Dalskov excelled at No. 2 singles last week, picking up three wins in the Gauchos' matches with No. 56 Denver, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside.
The native of Hoersholm, Denmark defeated Denver's Nejc Smole in a tight match by a 7-6, 6-7, 10-8 score to start off the week, but UCSB came up short 4-3. Dalskov followed that effort with a victory over UC Irvine's Victor Lamm, eeking out another close first set (7-6), before Lamm retired with a 6-5 lead in the second set. Santa Barbara dropped its second straight decision by a 4-3 count at the hands of the Anteaters. Dalskov then defeated UC Riverside's Joe Cartledge 6-4, 6-1 to cap off the week and help the Gauchos to an easy 7-0 win over the Highlanders.
With the victory, the Gauchos clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's Big West Men's Tennis Championship.
Dalskov also went 2-1 in No. 2 doubles action last week, partnering with Grant Robertson to defeat the Anteater duo of Zac Tsai and Andrei Radulescu 8-5. The UCSB tandem also picked up an 8-3 win over UCR's Jordan Peana and Pedraum Rouhafza and lost a decision by the same score to Smole and Nik Persson of Denver.
This is Dalskov's first-career Big West Athlete of the Week award and the third overall for UCSB this season.
The Gauchos have one final non-conference tune-up April 21 against Sacramento State before the Big West Championships begin the following weekend in Indian Wells, Calif. Saturday's match with the Hornets is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Rec Cen Courts.
